Same-Day Fulfillment Carries Target Over 2019 Holidays

Target survived the holiday season the way most retailers did: with a lot of help from ecommerce. The big box store reported this week that its online sales grew 19% over November and December 2019, but total comparable sales increased only 1.4% during that period. The biggest driver of this online sales growth was same-day order fulfillment, including in-store pickups, drive-up orders and same-delivery, which grew a staggering 50% compared to 2018. Other sales areas were not as strong for the retailer, with electronics and toys sales in particular spiraling down. “While we knew this season was going be challenging, it was even more challenging than we expected,” says Target CEO Brian Cornell.
